How to clean an old braided rug?

I don't be versed if it is an antique (probably older than I am, anyway). I got it from my grandparents cat-house free, and I am not sure what it is made of, but it might be some kind of wool. It smells terrible (from years of pet accidents), and collects dust like nothing

You didn't say how in a body it is. I would fill the bath tub with warmish/cool water, mix in some Tide and let it immerse. Then wiggle it around in there a bit to loosen the lodged dirt and grime. Rerun a second time. Then, with some help because it will be heavy, lift it

I after to make one for the animal shelter. If it's good I will give it to my grandma for Christmas!

Its not a moment ago braiding...you have to sew,too!
By hand ! lol
you need to sew loooong strips together
and have someone influence one end until the strips no longer twist. when you are done you sit on the floor and tightly start the center.
