I have a load of plain black beetles in the house and outside sheds. What causes this and how do I get rid?

The home is a 17th century farmhouse under renovation, so is exposed to damp. Have lived there 3 years and this is the first chance we have seen them. Any ideas on how to get rid of them or whats caused this infestation?
Dofficult to say what they are without seeing them, characterization is essential to understanding the problem. They could be wood worm beetles for warning which are small but a dark brown. If they are larger but truely coal-black they be mealworm beetles which are not damaging

I have a streaked corn snake and I usually take him out 2-3days after feeding him and he chiefly poos, but his skin and eyes just started to go cloudy. Is it okay to take him out still?
yes, but don't manipulate him too vigourously, as this may break the shed and cause him trouble when decisively shedding as he normally would.
